We are delighted that our centre’s events with Mr Nobuki Sugihara, son of the Japanese diplomat who saved many Jewish lives, and his family’s heroic story during WWII are profiled in an in-depth article in the Post Magazine this weekend.

The HKHTC have had wonderful press coverage for the visit of Nobuki Sugihara, son of Righteous Among the Nations Chiune Sugihara. During his week-long visit in Hong Kong, Mr Sugihara toured 8 high schools and universities and addressed over 2000 students.

The Sunday edition of Ming Pao, a well-respected and widely-circulated Chinese daily, covered Mr Sugihara’s meeting with students from the Harrow International School Hong Kong at the venue of our centre’s “Asian Righteous Among the Nations” Exhibition on the University of Hong Kong campus. It was with great honour that we welcomed Mr Nobuki Sugihara, son of Consul Chiune Sugihara, a Righteous Among the Nations, for our September events. Mr. Sugihara spent a week in Hong Kong, from September 18th – September 25th. During his stay, he opened a new, original exhibition on Righteous Among the Nations from Asia, including his father Chiune Sugihara who helped an estimated 10,000 Jewish people escape from Nazi controlled Lithuania.

The opening event for the “Asian Righteous Among the Nations” exhibition took place at the University of Hong Kong, on September 19 followed by a film Sugihara: Conspiracy of Kindness and a Q&A with Mr. Sugihara. Mr Sugihara also spoke at Asia Society (in conversation with Mr Ronnie Chan, the Chairman of Asia Society Hong Kong) as well as the Hong Kong Jewish Community Centre. Besides, Mr Sugihara also spoke to several hundred school students, discussing his father’s work and the importance of standing up to evil.

The HKHTC’s newly-appointed director of education Simon Li, a public historian and a university academic before joining the centre, visited the youngest Holocaust survivor from Schindler’s List in Jerusalem this fall. Before moving to Israel and establishing a family, Eva Levi, 77, lived a very different reality. She is now also the youngest person alive who lived through the horror of the Holocaust thanks to the famous Oskar Schindler, who was named Righteous Among the Nations by the Israeli government in 1963.
